a. A minor or major penalty, at the discretion of the Referee based upon the
degree of violence of the impact with the boards, shall be imposed on any
playerwho bodychecks, cross-checks, elbows, charges or trips an opponent in
such amanner that causes the opponent to be thrown violently into the boards.
(NOTE)
Any unnecessary contact with a player playing the puck on an obvious
"icing" or "off-side" play which results in that player being knocked into
the boards is "boarding" and must be penalized as such. In other instances
where there is no contact with the boards, it should be treated as
"charging".
Rolling an opponent (if he is the puck carrier) along the boards where he is
endeavoring to go through too small an opening is not boarding. However, if the
opponent is not the puck carrier, then such action should be penalized as
boarding, charging, interference or, if the arms or stick are employed, it should
be called holding or hooking.
b. When a major penalty is imposed under this rule, an automatic fine of one
hundred dollars ($100) shall be imposed.
c. When a major penalty is imposed under this rule for a foul resulting in an injury
to the face or head of an opponent, an automatic game misconduct shall be
imposed.
d. Any player who cross-checks, pushes or charges from behind an opponent who
is unable to defend himself, shall be assessed a major and a game misconduct.
This penalty applies anywhere on the playing surface.
e. In regular season games any player who incurs a total of two game misconduct
penalties for board-checking under Rule 45(c) and (d) shall be suspended
automatically for the next League game of his team. For each subsequent game
misconduct penalty the automatic suspension shall be increased by one game. In
playoff games, any player who incurs a total of two game misconduct penalties
for board-checking under Rule 45(c) and (d) shall be suspended automatically
for the next playoff game of his team. For each subsequent game misconduct
penalty during the playoffs the automatic suspension shall be increased by one
game.
