1997 NHL Rulebook - Playing Rules
Rule 48. Cross-Checking
(a)
A minor or major penalty, at the discretion of the Referee, shall be imposed on a player who "cross-checks" an opponent.
NOTE 1:
Cross-check shall mean a check delivered with both hands on the stick and no part of the stick on the ice.
NOTE 2:
When a major penalty is assessed for cross-checking, an automatic game misconduct penalty shall be imposed on the offending player.
(b)
When a major penalty is imposed under this rule, an automatic fine of one hundred dollars ($100) shall also be imposed.
