1997 NHL Rulebook - Playing Rules
Rule 60. Hooking
(a)
A minor penalty shall be imposed on a player who impedes or seeks to impede the progress of an opponent by "hooking" with his stick.
(b)
A major penalty shall be be imposed on any player who injures an opponent by "hooking". When a major penalty is imposed under this rule for a foul resulting in injury to the face or head of an opponent, an automatic fine of one hundred dollars ($100) shall also be imposed.
NOTE:
When a player is checking another in such a way that there is only stick-to-stick contact, such action is neither hooking or holding.
